Additions to Microsoft's clever Surface family

By Samantha Cordell | November 9, 2017

Microsoft SurfaceFollowing the release of the Microsoft Surface Studio, Surface Laptop and Surface Pro last quarter, we are now expecting two new members in the Surface family. Late last month Microsoft announced the introduction of the Surface Pro LTE and the Surface Book 2 with pre-orders being taken from this month and delivery starting soon after.

To help you decide what technology best suit your organisations requirements, we have outlined some information on each model…

Say hello to the Surface Pro LTE

The Surface Pro LTE is a variation of the Surface Pro launched in July. A big benefit of having this new LTE-connected Surface is that you can reliably work anywhere without being Wi-Fi dependent. The removal of the internal fan in the Surface Pro i5 models has allowed space enough to install an 4G/LTE modem, allowing Surface Pro users to travel without an external dongle or Wi-Fi-hot spot to access the internet on the move.

There are two models, one with 4GB and the second with 8GB – we expect the latter to be popular in the business world as a great "Swiss Army Knife" portable PC.

The table below outlines the configurations on the two models announced to date:

And then along came the Surface Book 2

The other new addition to the family is the Surface Book 2. The Surface Book 2 replaces the original Surface Book released in October 2015.

Not only has it received a hardware upgrade but Microsoft has released details that there will be two sizes available – the first in the original 13.5 inch and then also in a larger 15 inch Surface Book 2. Overall it has more processing power, better graphics, and an extended battery life and includes the following key features….

Key Features:

  • The most powerful Surface ever - up to five times more powerful than the original
  • A powerhouse laptop with amazing graphics.
  • Available in a reinvigorated 13.5” PixelSense™ Display (15” is available in the US).
  • Available with 8th Gen Intel® Core™ processors and NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 1050 discrete graphics option.
  • Incredibly powerful and still provides all-day battery life – up to 17 hours of video playback.
  • Also available with two new USB-C adaptors (USB-C to HDMI and USB-C to VGA).

There are four variations announced to date, with the following configurations:

When will they be available?

Pricing and availability has only been partially announced for Australia, with a number of the 13.5 inch Surface Book 2 PCs available for purchase from the 17th of November.
