Blacksmiths 2 Breakwall Coast Walk - 26.9km

Written by Samantha Cordell | October 14, 2016

It was the best of days, it was the worst of days, it was 26.9km (give or take...)

Last weekend a small but excited group of Diamond ICT employees set out to help raise money for charity, along what must be one of the most stunning coastlines in Australia (we may be a little bias). The 26.9km started at Blacksmiths beach with the first 10km stretch along the sand to Redhead Beach, surprisingly everyone regrouped still quite chirpy and ready to continue...

Meeting up

Setting off at Blacksmiths

Still smiling after 10km on sand

... with the first 10km stretch along the sand to Redhead Beach, surprisingly everyone regrouped still quite chirpy and ready to continue...

The next 12km toward Merewether beach led us through picturesque reserves (Awabakal & Glenrock) where we had a new pack leader and gazed at wild flora; and across more stunning beaches (Dudley & Burwood) where the Whales put on a show!

The half way mark not only showcased the long stretch ahead but provided much needed inspiration [smile]...

 Beautiful flowers in bloom

Love the encouragement...though not planned

What struck us the most through out this walk was the generosity of spirit and time of the volunteers along the way. They provided motivation, encouragement, snacks, drinks and cheerfulness that kept up going, giving u p their days away from family & friends to support us - the were AMAZING!

Finally on the home stretch over Bar Beach hill, down King Edward Park, across Newcastle Beach and along Bathers Way, we kept going, one of the crew actually running the last 6km stretch (impressive).

As we inched toward the finish line, littered with people revelling and wearing medals, still with the ability to happily walk around, our spirits lifted as we walked the Nobbys breakwall to collect our own medals.

 Stunning Newcastle beach

Nearly there...

 We made it!

The walk truly was a team effort; the motivation from the support crew along the way, the motivation from each other and the motivation to raise money for charity kept us going for nearly 7 hours, we have since found out that the event raised over $30k for the various charities - Hunter Surf Life Saving, Ronald McDonald House and Westpac Helicopter Rescue which is fantastic and well worth the blisters and stiffness the few days later.... Who is joining us next year (September 2017)??
