Unless you have recently been living under a rock, you would have heard the increased hype around Artificial Intelligence software taking the world by storm - ChatGPT.
Released to the public in demo mode in November 2022, OpenAI's ChatGPT platform has rapidly become a media sensation due to its 'chat-like' ability to generate human-like text, answer questions, and generate all types of content (think all things from multi-page essays, articles, and recommendations to computer codes, entire website maps, and design briefs.)
For this article, "What you need to know about ChatGPT", we decided to put ChatGPT to the test ourselves and asked it to explain what ChatGPT is, and how it works.
What you'll read below is a startling example of ChatGPT's basic 'question/answer' function, demonstrating just how well-written, impressive, and at times self-boasting, its 'intelligence' truly is.
What is ChatGPT?
According to, well, itself, ChatGPT is "a state-of-the-art language generation model developed by OpenAI. It is trained on a massive amount of text data, allowing it to generate human-like text with high accuracy and fluency. The model is capable of understanding context and generating responses based on the input it receives. This technology has revolutionised the way we interact with machines and has opened the door to a wide range of applications, including chatbots, virtual assistants, and language translation."
How does ChatGPT work?
ChatGPT is a type of language model that uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like text. It is trained on a large dataset of text, such as books, articles, and websites, and uses this training data to learn patterns and relationships in the language. When given a prompt or a piece of text, ChatGPT generates a response by predicting the next word in the sequence, based on the patterns it learned during training. It uses a variant of transformer architecture which helps it to generate more coherent and fluent text. This process is repeated until the model generates a full response. The model's ability to generate human-like text makes it useful for tasks such as text completion, conversation, and language translation.

Example - Ryan Reynolds creates an ad for Mint Mobile using ChatGPT
Recently, actor, producer, and businessperson, Ryan Reynolds’, documented a creative experiment with ChatGPT as he used the software to create a script for a commercial for Mint Mobile, the wireless carrier he owns.
In a one-minute video posted to his YouTube channel, Reynolds describes ChatGPT as both “compelling” and "mildly terrifying".

Microsoft Investment in ChatGPT
On Monday 23 February 2023, Microsoft announced a $US10 billion ($14 billion) investment over several years in OpenAI, the creator of the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT.
Microsoft's statement said that the company is planning to deploy OpenAI's models "across our consumer and enterprise products."
The technology behind ChatGPT could, for example, be included in Microsoft's software products such as its search engine Bing, or the company's office applications.
Microsoft said it wants to ensure that AI breakthroughs are "broadly shared with the world."
