Diamond IT Women in Technology

On Sunday March 8 we celebrate International Women's Day. This years theme is #EachForEqual, which is all about actively choosing to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.

Over the month of March, we will be introducing you to our dynamic Women in Technology in a four part series. We'd like you to meet our Carrier Solutions Specialists, Nicole Burnat and Mel Davies.

Nicole Burnat - Carrier Solution Specialist

Nicoel Burnat

Can you share a little bit about what you do and what a typical day is like for you?

My day is spent solving problems & puzzles for our customers & business.

How did you come to find yourself working in the technology industry?

My father was a Radio Broadcast Engineer who worked on developing Linux/SME for Community Radio. I would often go to work with him as a child and this gave me my thirst for technology. I was offered a role with Telstra after my daughter was born and my meticulous & inquisitive nature propelled me toward more technical & analytical roles

How do you think advances in technology will impact your role?

As technology advances there are more and more tools for me to solve puzzles with and more and more complex puzzles to solve. Bring it on!

What advice would you give to women considering a career in the tech industry?

Never be afraid to ask questions or to learn in the way that you need to learn. Just keep digging until you understand what it is you need to understand.

Mel Davies - Carrier Solutions Specialist

Mel Davies -1Can you share a little bit about what you do and what a typical day is like for you?

I work for the Carrier Solutions Specialist (CSS) Team within Diamond IT. My primary role is to act as a contact point between our Customers and Telstra. I provide Account Support by completing bill analyses with the goal of finding significant savings for our customers, the connection of new Business Mobile Plans – along with a device if required (Smartphones, Tablets, etc), and connections and relocations of Business Voice and Data services. The majority of my correspondence with Telstra is done via an Online Portal, or via email, so Technology is extremely important in my role. It is a great feeling when you work with your customer on a solution, and then seeing the end goal come together, knowing their business will be able to run more efficiently with the products we are able to provide.

How did you come to find yourself working in the technology industry?

I have worked in the Telecommunications industry since leaving high school on and off, between having a family. In that time, the industry has changed significantly and it has been a great experience to see both IT and Communications merge into the Digital Realm. My parents also both worked in Telecommunications, and I stumbled into the role as a “temp” after high school, and never really left!

How do you think advances in technology will impact your role?

I rely heavily on technology to be able to do my role effectively. So as it advances, I’m sure it will continue to help with time management, data accuracy, efficiency, and as I work remotely one day a week, it is imperative to be able to be mobile and take my work with me. Diamond IT is an extremely Family Friendly company to work for, which means if I need to be home with my sick children, I have the option to log on from home and stay on track with my tasks! Technology advancements allows me to have all of these needs aligned.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in the tech industry?

Technology is such a huge and important part of our lives now. However, being involved in the tech industry on a day-to-day basis just means you get to be across the new advancements and enjoy implementing newly released products first hand.
